Read the following poems in Kathy Jetn̄il-Kijiner's Iep Jaltok Poems from a Marshallese Daughter (2017) available through UHM library
(You are encouraged to read as many as possible, but focus on the following ones.
In the first three, consider the role of mythology, ancestral figures, and non-human within her poetry. In the fourth "History Project" what new info did you learn? How is a poem able to capture life narratives differently than reading historical facts?
II. (p7)

Then view the following spoken word poems, once you have some background. The ancestral characters are alluded to within multiple spoken word poems.
CW: Some of the themes and imagery may be upsetting and unsettling. I have ended with "Rise: From One Island to Another" to offer some hope in solidarity.
Be prepared to discuss 1) "Lessons From Hawai'i" 2) "Dear Matafele Peinem" Statement & Poem 3) "Anointed"

When analyzing the poetry, pay attention to her precision of language, vivid descriptions, embodied and sense-oriented imagery. She uses repetition very effectively. What role does the audience play? How do the production values and aesthetics impact the poem? How do you feel in your body after you watch/hear the poem? What images stay with you after the poem ends?
