Assignments:
“Term” Paper. In 500 words or 2 double-spaced pages, thoroughly examine a term related to this course. I will collate these terms together for all of us to learn from each other’s research. Provide the intellectual genealogy of the term, its historical context and why it has come into prominence, how its meaning has changed over time, its reception and/or political currency in contemporary usage, how it applies to specific Island world views.
“Made” Creative Arts Piece. Arts and cultural praxis are an important way that Oceanic women have expressed their struggles and empowered their communities. Create something new; possibilities include: poetry, music, storytelling, short story, video, photography, collage, weaving, kapa, painting. Write a paragraph long artist bio. Write a one-page project description, explaining your rationale, genre, aesthetic intentions, region represented, personal connections.
Final Project. Apply and exhibit the feminist frameworks we have discussed this semester to your own research project. Select an island, a theme, or a person that we did not cover in depth. You might choose a writer or a poet-activist we did not include, or you might turn to an island region beyond our class scope (Puerto Rico, Phillipines, Taiwan, Atlantic islands). Your final project will have small check-in due dates to keep you on course: project proposal, outline, etc. You may work collectively or solo. Begin thinking about what you might like to explore in depth. Your final project could take the form of a protest zine, a recorded power point or multi-media presentation, or a traditional research paper (5-7 pages).
